Activities That Can Encourage Your Child to Be Active This Winter

Staying active and being outdoors are great for kids all year long. However, winter presents unique challenges when it comes to keeping kids active. Here are a few tips for making sure your child doesn’t live a sedentary life during the cold months.

Playing in the Snow

Playing in the snow is a great way to pass the time during the winter months and stay very active. There are a multitude of activities that can only be enjoyed when it snows, so you should teach your child to take advantage of this time. A snowball fight will keep your kids active. Snowshoeing or building a snowman is also a perfect activity for both movement and exploring the winter landscape. Sledding also ranks high for kids since it offers an adrenaline rush. Before your child goes sledding, make sure to establish rules for safe sledding in order to avoid injury.

Outdoor Winter Sports

Winter sports help keep kids active and introduce them to activities they may not be able to take part in the rest of the year. Skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating are popular winter favorites. It’s important for kids to understand that there is a learning curve with each sport. These activities are challenging but fun. Your child can sign up for a league that plays these sports or simply try them on his own or with friends. Make sure your child has the proper safety equipment and understands the risks before he plays. Your child may end up looking forward to winter more than any other season because of the sports he can play.

Nature Exploration

A landscape your child may feel like he knows completely transforms in winter. Snow blankets the ground and the entire view changes. If your child likes to hike and explore, winter is the perfect time to encourage these adventures. Have your child bring a nature journal or sketchpad to document what she sees. Allow her to grab a friend and take trails she loves to see what is different about them in the winter. Help her prepare a backpack with all the essentials before she explores. It’s also wise for her to hike with a friend or parent to ensure the snow doesn’t make it too difficult for her to find her way home.

Winter weather doesn’t have to signal the end of outdoor activity. Help your child stay active during the cold months to appreciate all that winter has to offer.
