Many teenagers are susceptible to mood swings, especially when puberty hits and they are dealing with changing hormones. This is a particularly hard time for kids to maintain a positive attitude if they already struggle with self-confidence. Parents can help their teenagers handle these shifting emotions in positive ways. Try talking things out or suggesting a healthy distraction such as sports, exercise or a hobby. Since certain smells can uplift our mood, the use of aromatherapy could be beneficial.
Talk
Although your teenagers may not want to talk to you about their feelings, it is important to keep the lines of communication open. Parents should reassure their teens that moderate mood swings are normal, and discussing issues usually makes them seem less extreme. Newport Academy suggests that if your teenager refuses to talk to you or shows signs of serious issues, you might want to suggest speaking with a school counselor or therapist. Friends and older siblings could also be helpful, but it’s important the teen talk to someone who cares.
Aromatherapy
Essential oils can be used to help teenagers cope with mood swings, enhance positive feelings and improve self-confidence. doTERRA explains that an aroma can hit the receptors in the nose and go into the brain and to help change our thought process as well as affect our moods. Sometimes we tag a certain emotion, like feeling good, with a smell. When we are feeling bad and we reach for that smell again it brings us right back to feeling better because of that association and the response our brain has to that smell.
Lavender oil produces a calming effect and induces a more peaceful sleep. If your teen struggles with fear of social interactions, Juniper Berry or Cassia might help. Teens who need an aid to keep them focused might study more effectively in the presence of Frankincense, Orange and Peppermint oils.
Try a Healthy Distraction
Another way to help your teenager manage mood swings is with hobbies or other distractions. If your teen enjoys music or art, encourage her or him to pursue those interests. Teens can also build confidence through sports, yoga or martial arts. Teenagers often find themselves in a bad mood if they become stressed, and they need an outlet for their feelings. Evolve Treatment Center recommends using a hobby or other healthy interest to relieve tension as it usually makes both teens and their parents feel better.
There are many ways parents can help teenagers deal with mood swings and build their self-confidence. Using these easy techniques will assist you in navigating the emotional teenage years.
